Christmas Morning!

September 24, 2007

I’m as giddy as a school girl on christmas morning! I’ve finally gotten what I’ve wanted for so long. I’ve waited patiently (okay not so patiently) to get it and now I finally have it! I found a good sale and my hubby was okay with it.

I have a new camera. Not just any camera, a Sony Alpha A100. 10.2 Mp, and it came with an extra lens! WOOT!

I do feel like I have to relearn how to take a picture though! There are so many options and buttons and gadgets. I was so used to my other SLR. Oh and the coolest thing; with the purchase of my camera I get free photography lessons. I just got to figure out how I can do that on Saturday mornings the same time as my husband’s quartet rehearsals. hmm.

Anyway, I’ve played a little already. I’ve taken mostly just flowers in the yard. Still got to get the hang of this thing.

Cali or bust: Day one – ABQ to Barstow

September 12, 2007

I had spent most of the day Saturday cleaning the house and packing and doing laundry. Getting movies, cd’s, books on tape and food together for the trip. Packed each child a bag and one for myself as well. He had said at one point he wanted to leave at 3am, but then readjusted the departure time to 6am. Barstow wasn’t that far and we’d get there in the early afternoon with plenty of time to swim.

Sunday morning came and everything went smoothly. Everything and everyone was in the car and it didn’t feel overstuffed. We had plenty of room for the random things that get purchased on a vacation that then have to be brought home. Son wasn’t too sure about the trip. He kept telling us he didn’t want to go to the beach, he was scared there would be sharks. We assured him there wouldn’t be any sharks, but he didn’t agree. He suggested over places of destination. Oregon so he could see his friend Alice, or go to Aunt Brandi’s. We always go to Aunt Brandi’s, why wouldn’t we this time.

The drive wasn’t too eventful. I had bought headphones and a splitter so the kids could watch movies on the DVD player and we wouldn’t have to hear it. I soon learned that Daughter #2 didn’t travel the same as her older siblings did when they were little. With them once we got in the car they’d sleep for hours, wake up when the car stopped etc. Not her, she stuck to her 2-3 hour feeding schedule! She’d wake up, and be hungry. I’d have to reach around and tide her off with a binky, and then my finger till she became inconsolable, but that would usually corrolate with a food or gas or potty stop.

We stopped in Flagstaff for lunch. Just for future reference for anyone that might be traveling through the area with kids there is only one fast food place in Flagstaff with a kid’s playplace. Del Taco. It’s easy to find. I knew this from a previous trip so I made sure to inform my hubby as he was driving. The weather was beautiful there, there was a cool breeze in the air, but it was only 11:30am or so. It warmed up.

We watched the outside temp gage on our car’s dash as we drove further West. 75 degrees, 85, 95. Kingman, Arizona-105 degrees! We didn’t realize when we set out that we’d be going to California during their week of sizzling-record breaking temperatures. Needles, California-109 degrees! We saw the Colorado River, people boating and swimming. We felt a twang of sadness in our hearts for the days when we’d play on Lake Powell. That is the Colorado River you know!

As we got closer to Barstow I started to notice a haze in the air. Having never been to Southern California and hearing so much about the Smog (Haze is the politically correct term now I guess) I assumed this was what I was seeing. (Actually it was smoke in the air from the fires near Big Bear).

Any time I hear the word Barstow I immediately think of the movie ‘Erin Brokovich’, although it didn’t take place IN Barstow, the county courthouse was there. The little town that centered around the movie was Hinkley. I had gotten some movie passes at work to see a sneak preview of that movie when we were first married. We liked it, but my hubby liked it more because it took place in his mission.

Well we got there, and drove around looking for our hotel. Like a lot of the old towns that are on “Old Route 66″ the town looks kinda like a barbell. To big ends with just the old 66 connecting. We drove around the east end when we finally stopped and asked someone where our hotel was. It was on the west end of town. Of course. We had been biding our time with the hungry tired kids with promises of swimming in the pool. Sadly, when we checked in, their pool was empty under construction for resurfacing. The kids were upset and we were very disappointed and frustrated that our promise of swimming was broken.

The west end of town was where the outlet malls were. There were also tons of food places, including an In N’ Out. We, the parents, were excited about this. The kids just wanted the regular; chicken nuggets and a McDonald’s playplace. We’ve learned with our kids, that’s its just easier to do both. We, the parents, will eat at one place, keep the kids happy with promises of going to the golden arches. Then we go to Mickey D’s where they eat and we watch them play satisfied with our yummy food we ate before. We stayed there till it got dark and then walked back to our hotel room.

The kids were way too excited to go to sleep, as well as the fact they both fell asleep in the car the last hour or so to Barstow. They played in the tub, they jumped on the beds, they spun each other around in the desk chair. The baby was absolutely exhausted, crying and crying. Nothing seemed to soothe her. I gave her a bath, put her in jamas, and wrapped her up tight in a blanket. She looked like a little papoose baby. She ate and then finally fell asleep, still wrapped like a little burrito baby.

The funniest part of the night was after the lights turned out. We had two queens, the boys on one bed, the girls on the other. Daughter #1 had bounced between the two beds, but before finally settling with me she had been lying with daddy. It was quiet for a few seconds, and then she let out a big loud heavy sigh and announced “not asleep yet”. We all busted up laughing.

We needed to get some sleep for the next day’s events, but luckily we went from Mountain to Pacific time, so any time we woke up would be considered “sleeping in”.

the travel bug

September 12, 2007

I get it. A lot. This little itch that usually needs to be scratched. Sometimes I can put it off, but other times I just got to go. Most times when I get this bug I have been able to figure out a way to work it out, even if that means traveling by myself with my kids.

A few months ago I got the overwhelming feeling that we needed to go visit Zen Mama in California. We have kept in touch with each other since we left Ricks 8 years ago, but with her living in Cali and me living in New Mexico it was the closest we’ve ever lived to each other since Rexburg. It’s the first time we’ve been within traveling distance of visiting! Labor Day weekend was soon approaching and I thought it would be the perfect time to go. I approached my hubby with the idea. He didn’t say No, but he didn’t exactly say Yes either. I didn’t push it. A few weeks passed, and I checked the quartet calendar just out of curiousity. Just to see if Labor Day weekend would even be an option. Sadly, there was a wedding on Saturday September 1st. There wouldn’t be a way of going to California that weekend. So I gave up on the idea.

So when my hubby called me at 7:30am on Thursday August 30th and asked me if I still wanted to go to California I was a little surprised! I didn’t think there would be a way, so I had pushed the idea aside thinking that maybe sometime we’d be able to go, but not any time soon. He suggested the idea of leaving on Sunday September 2nd, and taking the whole week! He had served his mission for the church in San Bernardino, and ever since we were married had always wanted to take me back to the old mission grounds just to show me. I haven’t ever been to southern California either. He sent me an email with his ideas for the weeks itinerary and told me to book hotels for every night. Oh and call Zen Mama to make sure it wasn’t too late of notice to come knocking on their door!

We were going on a trip! We were going to California, and to the beach! We’d finally get to see Zen Mama and her husband and her kids. YAY! Zen helped me look for hotels and figure out how relatively close things were. Telling me direction or roads or distance in SoCal was like speaking a foreign language. I had no clue! Good thing I had a transplanted native to help me out!

What a silly kid

September 10, 2007

She is ten weeks old now and such a good baby. Since she was born I’ve never had a problem with her going back to sleep after a nighttime feeding, and very, VERY rarely did it require a binky. She’d just dose off happy as a clam. In the last couple of weeks she’s found her thumb. At first it was only if she were on her tummy but she’s now been able to master the the thumb-to-mouth act while on her back. I’m so proud! I never let my other two kids suck their thumbs, I encouraged the binky. Both have their pros and cons, but this time around I’m all for “self-soothing”. I hated wandering into the room a dozen times a night because the baby lost the binky.

Also in the past few weeks she’s mastered smiling, laughing and cooing. Yesterday morning she woke up and Daddy got her out of her bed. I dozed while the two of them had a great time making faces and noises at each other. She enjoys her “face-time” with everyone in the family, including her big brother and sister. With all of this taken into consideration last night still kinda made me laugh.

She’s accomplished sleeping through the night, some nights she’ll wake up maybe once to eat but most nights she sleeps right though. Last night she woke up at 3am, I listened for a few minutes to see if she’d suck her thumb back to sleep. After a few minutes I could tell that wasn’t gonna happen so I got up and nursed her. After 20 minutes she dozed off and I layed her back in her cradle. As soon as she was on her back her eyes opened, she saw my face leaning over her trying to tuck her in and she gave me a big grin. It made me smile, so she laughed. I told her “night-night baby” and kissed her and walked away, fully expecting her to fall back asleep. Instead; she started to cry. I walked back over, as soon as my face was in view she started to laugh and smile again. I rubbed her tummy, told her “night-night” again and walked away, again she started to cry. I realized then, she wanted to see me, not go back to sleep. I walked back over, picked her up and nursed her for another 15 minutes, she dozed off and I carefully layed her back down in the cradle. Again she opened her eyes as soon as her back touched the bed, she laughed and smiled when she saw my face. I kissed her and told her “it’s night-night time” and crawled back into my bed. She let out one little cry of disappointment and fell back to sleep.

Doesn’t she know that day time is for being cute and smiley? Night time is for sleepy-time!
